Kylian Mbappe, captain of the French team, is racing against time to recover for the last group-stage game against Poland.
French forward Kylian Mbappe is working on his recovery from a broken nose, yet it's uncertain if he will play in the final group-stage match against Poland in the European Championship, according to their coach Didier Deschamps.
Deschamps, speaking on the French show Telefoot, did not reveal whether Mbappe would be present in the game in Dortmund but provided hopeful updates on his captain's recovery, who sustained a fractured nose in the opening match against Austria last Monday.
"You'll see soon if he will play, but everything is heading in the right direction. He is healing, the bruising is subsiding daily, and he's adjusting to the mask. He is doing well," Deschamps said.
Following the goalless match against the Netherlands in Leipzig on Friday, during which Mbappe remained on the bench, the French press has heavily scrutinized the team's offensive skills.
The only French goal in their past three matches was actually an own goal by Austria's Maximilian Wober in their initial Group D match in Duesseldorf.
Deschamps offered no clear signals regarding whether he plans to alter the attacking lineup as France, with four points, appears nearly assured of advancing to the round of 16.
"I have assembled a team to ensure qualification and the best possible outcome in the group. We always aim for optimal recovery [for players]. Interpret that as you will," he remarked.
In a press conference on Sunday, Mbappe's teammates hinted that the 25-year-old star is eager to return to the field, having played for an hour in a practice session against a local academy team on Saturday.
"When he was playing, he gave his all. He is adapting to his mask well, and he scored," said defender Jonathan Clauss.
"I think he wants to play the next game. He might prefer to do so without the mask, but that's not up to him," added midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni.
