14-year-old Coco Yoshizawa secures the skateboarding Olympic gold medal in Paris, with fellow Japanese contender Liz Akama as silver medalist.
Japanese teenager Coco Yoshizawa clinched the women’s street skateboard gold at the Paris Olympics in a final full of young competitors. Yoshizawa, at 14, led the podium alongside silver medalist Liz Akama from Japan and bronze medalist Rayssa Leal from Brazil at Place de La Concorde.
Yoshizawa accumulated 272.75 points from her top three runs, outperforming Akama with 265.95 points and Leal with 253.37 points. Despite her young age, Leal, aged 16 and a silver medallist from the Tokyo Olympics, was the eldest among the medallists in Paris.
The skateboarding event saw an intense competition under the sun following a prior day's postponement due to inclement weather. Skaters had the opportunity for up to four falls without penalization in their seven attempts. Yoshizawa displayed her skill and courage, securing her victory with a daring trick on the handrail.
As the only female medalist, Yoshizawa celebrated her triumph, setting the stage for the upcoming men’s street event featuring top Japanese skaters. With the likes of Yuto Horigome, Sora Shirai, and 14-year-old Ginwoo Onodera, Japan aims for further success in the skateboarding competition at the Paris Olympics.
