UN Working Group: Ex-Pakistan PM Imran Khan Unjustly Detained

The Geneva-based UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention demands immediate release of Imran Khan citing violation of international law.

A United Nations human rights working group has stated that former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan is currently detained without legal basis, infringing on international regulations. The Geneva-based UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention emphasized the need for Mr. Khan to be released immediately, emphasizing his right to compensation and other reparations as outlined in international law. The working group's opinion, dated March 25 but only made public recently, highlighted that Khan's detention lacked legal standing and seemingly aimed to prevent him from pursuing political office. It characterized the legal actions against Khan as part of a broader campaign targeting him and his political party, Pakistan Tehree-e-Insaf (PTI). In the lead-up to the 2024 general elections, the group alleged a series of repressive measures, including arrests, torture of party members, rally disruptions, and election fraud. Despite these claims, the Pakistani government has yet to respond to the UN working group's assertions, with the country's election commission refuting allegations of electoral malpractice. Following his removal as prime minister in 2022, Khan has faced over 200 legal cases and has been incarcerated since August of the same year. He has consistently maintained that the legal challenges he faces are politically motivated, orchestrated by adversaries seeking to hinder his political influence. Recent developments include an Islamabad court dismissing a plea that aimed at suspending the jail terms of Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, over an improper marriage under Islamic law. Despite temporary reprieves in corruption and treason cases, Khan remains in Adiala jail, with speculation suggesting the hand of Pakistan's formidable military in the legal actions against him. Khan's confrontation with the military escalated following his ousting through a parliamentary vote of no confidence, stemming from conflicts with senior army officials. Accusations of military involvement in an assassination attempt against Khan further strained relations, leading to nationwide unrest and a subsequent crackdown on his party. While PTI candidates secured significant seats in the general elections, their path to power was obstructed by a coalition favoring military interests. Furthermore, the lower house of Pakistan's parliament denounced a US congressional resolution calling for an independent probe into alleged vote rigging, reflecting the ongoing turbulence in Pakistan's political landscape.
