India’s T20 World Cup-winning captain will continue leading the ODI and Test teams next year, as announced by the BCCI.
India’s Rohit Sharma, who ended his T20 international career with an ICC T20 World Cup triumph, will captain the team at the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, as confirmed by the country’s cricket board.
Rohit will remain as the captain of India’s Test and ODI teams after securing the T20 title and breaking the nation’s 13-year wait for an ICC Men’s World Cup trophy. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) verified this on Sunday.
The BCCI’s Secretary Jay Shah expressed his confidence in Rohit's leadership in the upcoming 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) final and the Champions Trophy. Shah believes that both tournaments will be victorious under Rohit Sharma's guidance.
Rohit, along with Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja, announced their T20 retirement after the win against South Africa in Barbados. Coach Rahul Dravid also coached his final game during this match.
Shah commended the trio of veteran players and Dravid, highlighting their accomplishments in recent finals such as the ODI World Cup and the World Test Championship.
The ODI Champions Trophy is set to take place in February and March 2025 in Pakistan, India's neighboring rival in cricket. The highly anticipated Pakistan vs India match is scheduled for March 1 in Lahore, just 24km from the Indo-Pak border.
The BCCI's decision on participating in the Champions Trophy will be influenced by the Indian government's advice due to historical political tensions between the two nations.
India's last visit to Pakistan was in 2008 for the Asia Cup final, while Pakistan toured India in 2023 for the 50-over World Cup.
The WTC cycle will conclude in June 2025 with the final at Lord’s in London, where India aims to improve their runner-up finishes in the Test championship and the ODI World Cup under Rohit's leadership.
