Authorities report casualties and injuries as the Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express derails near Ayodhya.
A train accident in India's Uttar Pradesh resulted in the derailment of the Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express, leading to the deaths of two passengers and injuries to 20 others. The incident occurred near Ayodhya, with several carriages overturned. Rescue efforts were immediately initiated following the derailment at around 2:30pm on Thursday.
The injured passengers were promptly taken to nearby hospitals and health centers for treatment. Footage from NDTV displayed the aftermath, showing passengers stranded on a derailed compartment that had toppled onto its side. State relief commissioner Naveen Kumar coordinated the response, deploying a substantial team of rescuers, medical personnel, and ambulances to the accident site.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his condolences, directing officials to prioritize relief and rescue operations. Meanwhile, India has committed $30bn towards modernizing its railway infrastructure to enhance economic growth and connectivity. Despite a reduction in accidents over time, challenges persist due to the outdated rail system.
Historical data reveals significant annual casualties from rail accidents, attributing issues to defective tracks, inadequate maintenance, aged signaling equipment, and human errors. Recent incidents like the cargo train collision in West Bengal and the tragic collision in Bihar serve as reminders of the ongoing safety concerns within India's railway network.
