Imran Khan and his wife have been acquitted by a court in Pakistan in the unlawful marriage case. Despite the acquittal, Khan remains behind bars for other charges.
A court in Pakistan has cleared former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Khan, of unlawful marriage charges, as confirmed by his party and lawyer. The couple had previously been sentenced to seven years in prison just days before Pakistan's election in February, with the court ruling that their marriage in 2018 went against Islamic law.
In June, a court rejected their plea to suspend the February ruling, but on Saturday, an Islamabad court announced the acceptance of appeals from both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi.
Zulfi Bukhari, a senior official in Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, declared to Al Jazeera that the charges against them had been dismissed. However, despite the acquittal, Khan remains incarcerated due to accusations of inciting riots by his supporters in May 2023.
The legal saga continues for Khan as an anti-terrorism court in Lahore approved his arrest in connection with the previous year's riots. His party's legal team disclosed that the court declined to grant him bail, indicating the ongoing investigation into his alleged involvement in the unrest.
Bukhari further clarified that there are currently no remaining cases that would justify Khan's continued detention. The marriage case against Bushra Bibi, filed by her ex-husband Khawar Maneka, alleged that she did not observe the required three-month break under Islamic law before marrying Khan. The acquittal in this case should lead to her immediate release, as stated by Bukhari.
Recently, a United Nations panel criticized the arbitrary nature of Khan's detention and called for his immediate release after nearly a year behind bars. Despite legal challenges and political turmoil, Khan's party won significant seats in the general election but faced obstacles to forming the government.
Khan's political journey, marked by accusations and clashes with the military establishment, unfolds as he navigates legal battles and maintains a defiant stance against powerful forces in Pakistani politics.
