Carlos Alcaraz secures his third Grand Slam by overcoming Alexander Zverev in a five-set thriller at the French Open, maintaining an unblemished record in major finals.
Carlos Alcaraz mounted a comeback to overcome Alexander Zverev in a five-set final at the French Open, becoming the youngest man to claim Grand Slam titles on clay, grass, and hard courts.
The 21-year-old fought through cramps, reversing a 2-1 set deficit to triumph 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 after an intense four hours and 19 minutes on Court Philippe Chatrier.
Alcaraz, adding the Roland Garros title to his previous triumphant runs at Wimbledon against Novak Djokovic last year as well as the 2022 US Open, solidified his status in men's tennis.
He is set to head to the Australian Open next year, with the opportunity to become the youngest player to achieve a career Grand Slam.
Fourth-seed Zverev, who recently resolved a court case in Germany involving domestic abuse allegations, awaits his first major title. He last narrowly missed out on a Grand Slam in a five-set clash with Dominic Thiem in the 2020 US Open, which he led by two sets initially.
Zverev hoped to secure his maiden Grand Slam, following losses in six previous Slam semifinals. However, Alcaraz proved too formidable in pivotal moments, evening their head-to-head record at 5-5.
Alcaraz had expressed his desire to join the ranks of Spanish champions, particularly idolizing Rafael Nadal, who also claimed the Roland Garros title. He celebrated his victory with an emotional collapse to the clay, his head in his hands in disbelief.
