Boxer Nikhat Zareen's Pursuit of India's First Olympics Gold at Paris 2024

Double world champion Nikhat Zareen is aiming to secure India's first-ever female Olympics boxing gold in Paris 2024.

Fuelled by a strong desire to challenge stereotypes and societal norms, India’s Nikhat Zareen embraced boxing at the age of 13. Hailing from Nizamabad, Telangana, she aspired to become India's top female boxer, a goal she has surpassed with remarkable achievements. Zareen's journey began with a significant triumph at the Youth World Championships in 2011. Fast forward to 2022, she secured a gold medal in the 52kg category at the senior World Championships, joining the ranks of the legendary Mary Kom. She strategically shifted to the 50kg category in 2023, aligning with the Paris 2024 Olympics weight class and earning her second IBA World Championship gold. Establishing herself as a formidable contender in her division, Zareen stands as a strong medal prospect at the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics. The event, scheduled to commence on July 26, presents a chance for her to claim a historic gold medal, which would cement her legacy among India's boxing elite. India has seen only two female boxers secure Olympic medals to date, with Mary Kom winning bronze in 2012 and Lovlina Borgohain clinching bronze at Tokyo 2020. An Olympic gold for Zareen would elevate her status alongside Mary Kom, a six-time world champion, in the annals of Indian boxing greatness. Ahead of the Paris Olympics, Zareen shared insights into her boxing journey, upbringing, and aspirations for the future during an interview with Al Jazeera. Aiming to make her mark at the prestigious event, she remains focused on delivering her best performance and realizing her dream of an Olympic medal.
