The governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secures the position of speaker of the lower house of India’s parliament, with Om Birla being re-elected in a voice vote.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured the position of speaker of the lower house of India’s parliament.
Om Birla, from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP, was re-elected as Lok Sabha speaker in a voice vote. In a notable victory for Modi after challenging elections, Birla defeated Kodikunnil Suresh from the opposition Congress party.
“I congratulate you on behalf of the entire House and look forward to your guidance for the next five years. Your sweet smile keeps the entire House happy,” Modi complimented Birla.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, confirmed as the leader of the opposition, displayed a rare moment of unity with Modi by congratulating the speaker.
“It is crucial that the voice of the opposition is heard in this house,” Gandhi emphasized, expressing the opposition's willingness to support Birla.
The speaker of the lower house is typically a member of the largest party and elected through party consensus. However, due to the political rift following the elections, a rare voice vote was required this time.
With BJP securing only 240 of the 543 seats in the lower house, Modi had to negotiate with smaller parties to form a government under the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
Winning the battle for speaker in his third term strengthens Modi’s position, ensuring smooth passage of legislation. The opposition's attempt to secure the deputy speaker position in exchange for support was rejected by the BJP.
