China’s president emphasizes the need for continuous reform and consolidates his grip on the People’s Liberation Army.
China has been demonstrating its expanding military strength to Taiwan and the global community. Prior to Taiwan's elections, there were coordinated cyberattacks and disinformation campaigns aimed at the island. Beijing considers Taiwan its territory and does not exclude the use of force to integrate it. After the Taiwanese government's inauguration, China showcased its military power by encircling Taiwan in a two-day drill, including releasing an animated video of missiles striking Taiwanese cities.
Following these exercises, a Chinese military spokesperson emphasized their readiness and vigilance towards Taiwan. Moreover, China's most advanced aircraft carrier undertook sea trials, positioning the Chinese navy as second only to the US in the number of aircraft carriers. Despite these displays of military advancement, questions arise regarding President Xi Jinping's confidence in the armed forces.
Xi recently highlighted the existence of deep-rooted issues within the military, prompting necessary changes, signaling dissatisfaction with the current capabilities. Noteworthy was the elimination of the Strategic Support Force (SSF) within the recent military reorganization. The SSF's dissolution, despite its critical role, signifies a shift in Chinese military modernization strategy. The reorganization places space, information, and cyber warfare directly under the Central Military Commission's supervision, a move vital for enhancing military capabilities.
The reform aims to strengthen China's military prowess in modern warfare, challenging the dominance of the US military in this sphere. Within the context of strained relations between Beijing and Washington in various territorial disputes, Xi's ultimate goal is to surpass the US militarily. The ongoing military restructuring coincides with significant leadership changes and purges within the Chinese armed forces, showcasing Xi's adaptability and resolve to maintain control and pursue his strategic objectives.
Xi's ruthless adaptability is evident in the removal of high-ranking officials, signaling a recalibration of loyalty and power dynamics within Chinese elite politics. The recent military reorganization reflects Xi's quest for a capable and loyal military, aligning with his visions for China's military dominance. Going forward, political work within the armed forces, emphasizing Xi Jinping Thought, may impact military training and officer behavior, ultimately shaping the combat capabilities of the Chinese military.
