Social media platform X introduces a feature to conceal users' 'likes,' promising improved privacy for users.
X, previously known as Twitter, will no longer allow users to view which posts others have liked.
With this update, individuals can now only see the posts they have personally liked.
The social media company announced the change on Wednesday, asserting that it will better safeguard user privacy.
"Users will still be able to see posts they have liked themselves [though others won't]," the company stated in a post on X.
"Like counts and other data for your own posts will still be visible under notifications. However, you won't be able to see who liked someone else's post."
X's owner Elon Musk referred to this change as a "significant update."
Haofei Wang, X's director of engineering, had earlier mentioned that the likes feature promotes detrimental behaviors.
"Some users hesitate to like content perceived as controversial due to fear of backlash or to maintain their public image," Wang explained last month on X.
This modification is part of a series of changes implemented since Musk's $44 billion acquisition of the notable platform in late 2022.
Since taking over, X has significantly reduced moderation and reinstated previously banned accounts, including those of former U.S. President Donald Trump and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones.
Musk has claimed that these updates support free speech, although critics argue that the Tesla CEO is fostering harmful rhetoric and misinformation.
Earlier this month, X updated its guidelines to formally permit the sharing of consensual adult-themed content that is appropriately labeled.
