What is Louisiana’s Ten Commandments law and why is it contentious?

Louisiana enacted a law mandating the display of the Ten Commandments in state-funded schools, sparking legal challenges.

The US state of Louisiana has enacted legislation that mandates all state-funded schools and universities to exhibit the biblical Ten Commandments, which hold significance in Christianity and Judaism. The law, known as House Bill 71, has sparked debates and lawsuits over potential violations of the First Amendment and LGBTQ rights. Louisiana's Governor, Jeff Landry, signed the law on June 19, emphasizing the historical basis of the Commandments attributed to Moses. Critics argue that House Bill 71 infringes on free speech rights and represents an encroachment on LGBTQ rights. The law mandates public schools to prominently display the Ten Commandments in various school areas, including classrooms, libraries, and cafeterias before the commencement of the 2025 school year. Additionally, schools are permitted to seek private funding for the implementation of this requirement. Louisiana has also introduced other controversial laws, such as House Bill 98, allowing the hiring of chaplains in public school districts for mental health services. Another law, the Given Name Act, enables school staff to resist using a student's preferred name or pronouns based on birth-assigned names. Moreover, Louisiana is considering legislation like House Bill 463, which seeks to prohibit gender-affirming care for transgender minors. In a separate move, Louisiana has categorized abortion pills as controlled substances, aligning them with highly addictive drugs. Opponents of these laws, including the ACLU, argue that they breach constitutional principles of religious freedom and the separation of church and state. The ACLU has denounced the Ten Commandments law as unconstitutional and coercive to students' religious beliefs. Critics view these laws as unconstitutional due to the Establishment Clause that bars the government from endorsing a specific religion. Louisiana's Ten Commandments law has ignited a debate on the boundaries between religious practices and state institutions.
