WestJet Strike Disrupts Flights for Thousands of Travelers

WestJet's mechanics strike leads to the cancellation of hundreds of flights, affecting travel plans during the Canada Day weekend.

Canada’s WestJet has disrupted travel plans by canceling over 800 flights due to a strike by mechanics, impacting numerous individuals over the Canada Day weekend. Some 680 workers initiated the strike after unsuccessful negotiations between the Calgary-based airline and the Airplane Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA) concerning salaries and working conditions. WestJet's President and CEO, Diederik Pen, issued an apology to affected travelers, acknowledging the "unnecessary work stoppage" and praising employees for maintaining safe operations. Despite ongoing cancellations, WestJet and AMFA continue to exchange accusations of bad faith negotiations, with the AMFA arguing for a wage increase costing less than 8 million Canadian dollars beyond the company's initial offer. WestJet's proposed wage rise includes a 12.5 percent increase in the first year and a cumulative 23.5 percent raise over the contract's duration. The strike's impact extends to approximately 110,000 travelers, as members of the union voted overwhelmingly against a previous pay deal with WestJet.
