US and UK forces have carried out air strikes on Yemen as the Houthi rebels persist in attacking routes in the Red Sea.
The United States and the United Kingdom have executed six air strikes on targets in Yemen, as reported by a television station operated by the Houthis. This comes as the Yemeni group continues to disrupt shipping lanes in the Red Sea.
According to Al Masirah TV, four strikes were concentrated on Hodeidah’s airport, a key port city on the Red Sea, and the seaport of Salif to its north. Additionally, two air raids impacted the Al-Thawra area, situated north of Sanaa, Yemen’s capital.
There are no immediate reports of casualties, and neither the US nor UK military has confirmed these attacks. This round of strikes follows prior US and UK actions in Hodeidah province, which the Houthis claimed resulted in 16 fatalities last week.
The Houthis, who govern Sanaa and regard themselves as Yemen’s official armed forces, have been striking shipping lanes in the Red Sea and launching missiles and drones at Israeli targets for several months, expressing solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.
Later on Friday, the Houthis declared that they had used drones and missiles to attack two vessels bound for Israel in the Red Sea.
These operations by the Yemeni group have incited anger from the US and other Western nations. Despite a sustained bombing campaign by the US and its allies against Houthi targets in Yemen since January, the Houthis' attacks have not been deterred.
The US military regularly announces interceptions of Houthi attacks. On Thursday, it reported the destruction of eight Houthi drones launched over the Red Sea.
On the same day, the Houthis claimed responsibility for conducting two joint military operations with the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, targeting ships at the Israeli port of Haifa in retaliation for the "massacres of the Israeli enemy in Rafah" in southern Gaza.
Since October 7, more than 36,700 individuals have lost their lives in Israel’s conflict with Gaza.
Houthi leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi has announced that the group's operations against Israel, in collaboration with the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a coalition of Iran-backed Iraqi armed groups, would escalate.
The concurrent attacks by the Houthi, US, and UK forces have heightened fears of an expanded conflict in Gaza and raised concerns regarding the resolution efforts of Yemen’s civil war. The Houthis have been engaged in combat with forces loyal to the internationally recognized government, supported by Saudi Arabia, since 2014.
A delicate ceasefire has been maintained since 2022.
A Bloomberg News report published on Thursday indicates that Washington seeks to block critical components of a United Nations peace plan adopted in December by the warring parties in Yemen unless the Houthis halt their assaults on international shipping.
