Mount Etna and Stromboli volcanoes in Sicily erupt, causing disruptions including the closure of Catania's airport.
Italy’s Mount Etna and the smaller Stromboli volcano have erupted, sending hot ash and lava into the skies over Sicily. These eruptions have led to heightened alert levels and the temporary closure of Catania's airport, causing flight disruptions.
Etna, a highly active volcano globally, has displayed intense activity recently, illuminating the night sky near Catania. Meanwhile, Stromboli, situated off the northern coast of Sicily, has been spewing lava into the sea.
"The runway at Catania Airport is unusable due to volcanic ash fall, resulting in the suspension of all arrivals and departures," the airport management company stated.
Flights are expected to resume at 3 pm GMT, with passengers advised to verify their flight statuses before traveling to the airport.
Ash plumes reaching heights of 4.5 km were recorded by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) on Thursday.
Videos circulating on social media depicted central Catania streets covered in dense layers of black ash, impeding traffic. Residents and authorities mobilized to clean up the city after roads and vehicles were coated in ash.
Mount Etna, towering at 3,324 meters, has erupted numerous times in recent decades, with its current activity leading to ash fall at Catania airport.
Stromboli has been placed under a red alert by Italy's Civil Protection Department, signifying the highest threat level. Authorities are closely monitoring Stromboli and ensuring readiness for potential evacuations in case of escalation.
The fire department has increased its presence on Stromboli, an island adjacent to Sicily, known for being continuously active. Stromboli, reaching heights of 920 meters and having a base below sea level, is recognized as one of the few nearly always active volcanoes globally.
In a past eruption in 2019, one individual lost their life and another sustained injuries on Stromboli.
