Andrew Miller resigns citing family reasons amid ongoing conflict in Gaza, highlighting a series of departures from the Biden administration.
A high-ranking US Department of State official specializing in Israeli-Palestinian matters has resigned this week, as reported by US media, amidst the eight-month-long conflict in Gaza which has resulted in the deaths of over 37,400 Palestinians.
Andrew Miller, who served as the deputy assistant secretary for Israeli-Palestinian affairs, cited personal reasons for his resignation, according to The Washington Post on Friday.
Miller informed his colleagues that the ongoing conflict, which began in October, had become overwhelming, prompting his decision to spend more time with his family, the report stated.
Described as a critic of US President Joe Biden's close alliance with Israel's government, The Post first revealed the news of Miller's resignation.
Miller's resignation is the latest in a series of departures from the Biden administration across various government sectors due to the US's continued support for Israel. However, The Post noted that Miller mentioned he would have preferred to stay on if not for his personal obligations, even in areas where he disagreed with the administration's policy.
Al Jazeera's Kimberly Halkett reported from Washington, DC, highlighting the increasing dissatisfaction within the Biden administration due to the president’s firm support for Israel's war on Gaza.
"Several high-profile resignations have already occurred, with claims that the president is distorting facts, ignoring the situation, or even being complicit in the ongoing deaths of Palestinians in Gaza," Halkett stated.
Miller was instrumental in the executive order from February which led to sanctions on several Israeli settlers for attacking Palestinian communities in the occupied West Bank, according to CNN.
Previously, Miller served as a senior policy adviser to the US ambassador to the United Nations and was the director for Egypt and Israeli military issues on the White House National Security Council during the Obama administration.
In May, Major Harrison Mann, a former US Army officer, mentioned he resigned months earlier due to his nation's unwavering support for Israel's war in Gaza. He left the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) in November.
US airman Aaron Bushnell passed away after setting himself on fire outside Israel's embassy in Washington, DC, in February.
Mass demonstrations have taken place outside the White House against the war, with more protests expected leading up to the November presidential election.
"Further protests are anticipated when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu speaks at a joint session of Congress next month, with numerous members of Congress already planning to boycott the address," Halkett explained.
