New UK Prime Minister Starmer Announces Ministerial Team following Landslide Election Victory

Rachel Reeves appointed as the UK’s first female finance minister and David Lammy as foreign secretary by Keir Starmer, the newly elected Prime Minister.

The newly elected Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, has revealed his ministerial team following the Labour Party's significant victory in the general election, which ended 14 years of Conservative rule.

On Friday, Rachel Reeves was appointed as the finance minister, marking the first time a woman has held this position in the history of the UK. Reeves, a former child chess champion and Bank of England economist, aims to boost the country's economy with sound fiscal management.

“Being appointed as chancellor of the exchequer is a tremendous privilege,” Reeves expressed on X, a social media platform. She added, “To all young girls and women reading this, let today be a testament that there are no limits to your aspirations.”

David Lammy, a groundbreaking legislator, was chosen as the foreign secretary. Raised by Guyanese immigrants in Tottenham, north London, Lammy has represented the area in Parliament since 2000.

At age 27, Lammy became the youngest Member of Parliament (MP) and gained ministerial experience under the governments of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.

Expressing his support for global initiatives to achieve an "immediate ceasefire" in Israel’s conflict with Gaza, Lammy emphasized the importance of securing the release of remaining captives after assuming the role of foreign secretary.

Angela Rayner, the deputy leader elected independently of the actual leader by party members in 2020, will serve as Starmer's deputy prime minister. Yvette Cooper has been appointed as the home secretary.

Notable appointments in Starmer's team include Lisa Nandy as the culture secretary, John Healey as defence secretary, and Shabana Mahmood as justice secretary.

Additionally, Wes Streeting, Bridget Phillipson, Ed Miliband, and Lucy Powell will take on roles as health secretary, education secretary, energy secretary, and leader of the House of Commons, respectively.
