Netanyahu Criticizes US for 'Holding Back' Israeli Arms Supplies

The Israeli Prime Minister argues that the United States is delaying weapon shipments to Israel, despite assurances from Washington.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has condemned the administration of US President Joe Biden for "withholding weapons" from Israel amid its ongoing conflict with Gaza.

In a video statement on Tuesday, Netanyahu expressed disbelief that the US had been "holding back weapons and ammunition" from Israel in recent months.

Recent Developments

"Secretary [of State Antony] Blinken assured me that the US administration is working around the clock to resolve these delays. I certainly hope it’s true," Netanyahu said, referencing his discussions with Blinken during a recent visit.

The US furnishes Israel with $3.8 billion in military support annually, and Biden recently signed legislation granting an additional $17 billion to support Israel amid its Gaza operations.

Despite this support, Washington confirmed it had suspended a shipment of 900kg bombs to Israel due to concerns about civilian casualties in Rafah, Gaza.

Ongoing Aid and Military Sales

Despite the hold on the bomb shipment, the Biden administration has permitted further arms sales to Israel, including a $1 billion package last month. Additionally, reports indicate that the US is pushing Democratic lawmakers to approve an $18 billion sale of 50 F-15 fighter jets to Israel.

Blinken reiterated that the US remains committed to Israeli security, with arms transfers continuing as usual except for the paused bomb shipment.

"We are still reviewing the shipment of 2000-pound bombs because of concerns about their use in densely populated areas like Rafah," Blinken stated. "Everything else is progressing as normal."

White House Denial

The White House disputed Netanyahu's claims, stating that only one shipment had been paused. "We are actively discussing this particular shipment with Israeli officials. There are no other pauses," White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said.

International Concerns

The Biden administration faces increasing pressure to halt military aid to Israel amid allegations of human rights abuses in Gaza, including targeting civilian infrastructure and torturing detainees.

In May, Biden drew a line by warning Israel against invading Rafah, stating the US would not support such an offensive. Despite these warnings, Israel moved forward, displacing hundreds of thousands of Palestinians.

The Rafah border crossing, a crucial humanitarian gateway, remains closed by Israeli forces as the conflict continues. The Biden administration maintains that the assault does not constitute a "major" operation compared to other military efforts in Gaza.
