NATO is currently hosting the final day of its three-day summit in Washington, DC, commemorating its 75th anniversary. During the summit, NATO confirmed Ukraine's path to NATO membership and committed to offering at least $43bn in military assistance to Kyiv. The alliance's defence ministers previously agreed to dedicate a minimum of 2% of their GDP to defense spending, with 23 out of 32 members meeting this requirement in 2024. The total defense expenditure of NATO countries is projected to reach $1.47 trillion this year, a significant increase from previous years. Established in 1949 with 12 member states, NATO has expanded to include 32 members, with the latest additions being Finland and Sweden in 2023 and 2024. The United States leads in military spending, accounting for approximately two-thirds of NATO's defense budget. Key NATO members like the US, Germany, the UK, France, and Poland contribute significantly to the alliance's defense expenditure. Poland, Estonia, the US, Latvia, and Greece are among the nations with the highest defense spending as a percentage of GDP, while Spain, Slovenia, Luxembourg, Belgium, and Canada spend the least. Significant increases in defense spending have been observed in Latvia, Lithuania, and Hungary compared to 2014.
