  • At least nine casualties and 29 injuries, including five children, occurred when Russian missiles struck an apartment building in Kryvyi Rih, the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
  • Ukraine’s air force successfully intercepted more than two dozen aerial threats, including cruise missiles, a Kinzhal ballistic missile, and Shahed drones launched by Russia. The Dnipropetrovsk region’s governor reported injuries to three individuals and damage to nine private houses, while the Kyiv region's governor stated that over 100 personnel were working to douse a fire caused by the attack.
  • Ukraine’s military claimed to have hit three Russian surface-to-air missile systems in Russia-occupied Crimea near Belbek and Sevastopol. The Russian-installed governor of Sevastopol stated that air defenses thwarted the missile attack without causing any damage.
  • The Kremlin reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin convened a meeting with Defence Minister Andrei Belousov, General Valery Gerasimov, and commanders of Russia’s five military districts to review and discuss “plans to continue the hostilities”.

Political and Diplomatic Developments

  • The United States dramatically expanded sanctions on Russia, targeting over 300 individuals and entities in Russia, Europe, Asia, and Africa, including China-based companies accused of selling semiconductors to Moscow. The US Treasury also increased the risk of secondary sanctions for foreign financial institutions engaging with Russia’s wartime economy, potentially blocking their access to the US financial system.
  • National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan mentioned that US President Joe Biden and Zelenskyy would sign a bilateral security agreement during their meeting on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Italy.

  • UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is expected to announce up to 242 million pounds ($309.7m) in bilateral aid to Ukraine at the summit to meet Ukraine’s immediate humanitarian, energy, and stabilization needs, his office reported.
  • Zelenskyy made an unplanned visit to Saudi Arabia, where he engaged in “productive and vigorous” talks with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on the June 15-16 peace summit in Switzerland and bilateral relations. Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for Saudi support but did not confirm whether the crown prince would attend the summit, with around 90 delegations expected.
  • Ukrainian lawmakers proposed a bill that would allow businesses to exempt employees from military service by paying $500 per month for each exempted worker.

Military Equipment and Armaments

  • Hungary agreed not to block NATO financial and military aid for Ukraine but stated it would not participate in the support. Earlier this year, NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg mentioned the alliance’s intent to secure long-term weapon supplies for Kyiv and a 100-billion-euro ($108bn) fund for arms. Hungary’s agreement paves the way for finalizing the package at the upcoming NATO summit in Washington.
  • Russia announced that soldiers and sailors from its northern Leningrad military district, bordering NATO countries such as Norway, Finland, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, joined tactical nuclear weapons deployment drills with Belarus this week. This move appears to extend the disclosed scope of the exercises to soldiers from districts along almost all of Russia’s European borders, from the Arctic Ocean to the Black Sea.
