Israeli assault on UN school serving as refuge in Gaza results in at least 16 deaths

In the Gaza Strip, the bombing of a school in Nuseirat refugee camp resulted in the deaths of numerous Palestinians and multiple injuries. Israel's bombardment of the coastal area continues.

At least 16 Palestinians have been killed in an Israeli attack on a United Nations-operated school that was housing displaced individuals in the Gaza Strip, as per the Gaza Government Media Office. The assault on al-Jaouni school in Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza led to more than 75 injuries, as reported by the Government Media Office.

"We condemn the Israeli occupation for perpetrating these continuous crimes and massacres against civilians, children, and women," the statement expressed.

The Nuseirat facility, managed by the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), is the most recent school to be targeted by the Israeli military since the Gaza conflict began in early October.

Since October 7, a minimum of 38,098 Palestinians have lost their lives in Israeli assaults across Gaza, leading to severe shortages of essential supplies such as food, water, medication, and humanitarian aid within the besieged enclave.

On the same day, numerous Palestinians, including five journalists, lost their lives as the Israeli military intensified its attacks on the region.

Videos recorded at the scene of the strike on the UNRWA school-turned-shelter in Nuseirat displayed the remnants of the collapsed building. Images showed young individuals sifting through pools of blood and being rushed to hospitals for treatment.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza revealed that 50 injured Palestinians were admitted to the hospital.

In a social media statement shared by the Israeli army, it was claimed that their air force targeted "several terrorists" in the vicinity of al-Jaouni school.

Reporting from the location, Al Jazeera's Hind Khoudary mentioned that hundreds of Palestinian families had sought refuge at the school following their displacement due to Israeli attacks in other parts of Gaza.

Last month, a comparable incident occurred when an Israeli attack on a UN-linked school in Nuseirat refugee camp led to significant casualties. Musab, a survivor of the previous bombing, shared his harrowing experience of losing family members in the attack.
