Israel’s renewed assault on Gaza results in casualties at a school, coinciding with ongoing peace negotiations.
Israel’s military has intensified its attacks on Gaza, resulting in the death of 77 Palestinians, with a significant number seeking refuge at a school, marking one of the deadliest days for the region recently.
The assault on Tuesday coincided with Hamas expressing concerns that the escalated Israeli offensive could disrupt the mediated ceasefire discussions. A fresh round of talks is scheduled to commence in Doha, Qatar.
In Abbasan, an Israeli airstrike on the al-Awdah school claimed the lives of about 30 individuals and injured 53, predominantly women and children, as reported by Palestinian medical personnel.
Video footage exclusively obtained by Al Jazeera depicted young Palestinians engaged in football activities at the school premises, followed by a sudden explosion that prompted chaos and panic.
A young Palestinian recounting the incident mentioned losing several family members due to the strike, expressing profound grief over the tragic loss.
The Israeli military has stated that it is investigating the incident.
In another part of Gaza, Israeli forces carried out bombings in the central Bureij camp, resulting in at least 17 casualties, including 14 children. Additional strikes in central Deir el-Balah led to the deaths of three more individuals.
Hamas denounced the attack on the al-Awda school as part of the "war of extermination" orchestrated by the Israeli government and urged Arab and Muslim nations to escalate protests against the ongoing conflict.
The European Union’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, also condemned the assault, emphasizing the need for an immediate ceasefire to alleviate the suffering of civilians and ensure the delivery of essential humanitarian aid.
Renewed efforts for a ceasefire are underway, with CIA director William Burns and Israel’s Mossad chief David Barnea expected to visit Qatar for discussions, following Burns' meetings with Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in Cairo.
Hamas recently made concessions by dropping a key demand regarding Israel's commitment to ending the war upfront, opting for negotiations during an initial six-week ceasefire period instead.
However, Ismail Haniyeh, the Hamas leader, expressed concerns about Israel's intensified attacks jeopardizing the negotiations and potentially derailing the progress made so far.
The escalation of hostilities prompted civilians in Gaza City to evacuate areas under Israeli military orders, leading to widespread displacement and distress among the population.
The UN Human Rights Office and the Palestinian Red Crescent voiced alarm over the civilian casualties and displacement resulting from the conflict, highlighting the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to end the suffering and ensure essential services reach those in need.
