Beryl heads towards Jamaica after creating chaos in the southeastern Caribbean, resulting in significant destruction.
Hurricane Beryl is advancing towards Jamaica following its rampage through the southeastern Caribbean, resulting in the demise of six individuals and the destruction of approximately 90% of homes on an island in the Grenadines archipelago.
Beryl, the earliest storm on record to achieve Category 5 status, was set to diminish in strength on Tuesday evening but was anticipated to remain an extremely dangerous Category 4 storm as it nears Jamaica and subsequently the Cayman Islands.
Scientists attribute the rapid strengthening of the storm to human-induced climate change.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) indicated that Jamaica is directly in the path of Beryl, expecting life-threatening winds, heavy rainfall, and storm surges on the island.
'Hurricane Beryl leaves a trail of devastation, claiming lives and wreaking havoc'
Beryl's impact has resulted in a grim situation, with reports of fatalities in Grenada, St Vincent and the Grenadines, and northern Venezuela. Prime ministers expressed concerns over the tremendous destruction caused by the hurricane.
Climate change exacerbates the situation, according to officials, with Beryl representing the first hurricane of the Atlantic season, setting a concerning precedent for the active hurricane season ahead.
Beryl transitioned from a Category 1 to a Category 4 storm in record time, highlighting the speed and intensity of its development. Forecasters predict an above-average hurricane season for 2024, indicating increased storm activity.
