Hurricane Beryl's Path to Mexico After Devastating Caribbean

Following a destructive journey through the Caribbean, Hurricane Beryl is now on course to make landfall on Mexico’s coast.

Hurricane Beryl made its way across various Caribbean islands, resulting in at least seven fatalities as it passed the Cayman Islands. Jamaica bore the brunt of the storm's impact, with roofs torn off and over 400,000 residents left without electricity. Reports indicated significant devastation in St Vincent and the Grenadines, with 95% of homes on two islands either damaged or destroyed. Although initially a Category 5 hurricane, Beryl weakened to a Category 3 as it progressed, remaining a potent threat. While heading towards Mexico, the hurricane is anticipated to maintain hurricane status until reaching the Yucatan Peninsula. Preparations are underway, with businesses shuttered in Playa del Carmen and Mexico's Navy warning tourists in Tulum. As of Thursday morning, Beryl was approximately 95 miles west-southwest of Grand Cayman island and 330 miles east-southeast of Tulum. Winds were recorded at 115 mph, moving west-northwest at 18 mph. Authorities in Mexico, including the civil defence agency led by Laura Velazquez, are bracing for Beryl's impact on the Caribbean coast. Evacuation efforts are underway in vulnerable areas, with temporary storm shelters set up as a precaution.
