US prosecutors are seeking a new indictment against Harvey Weinstein for additional sexual assault allegations.
Prosecutors in the United States revealed their plans for a November retrial for Harvey Weinstein as they investigate additional violent sexual assaults allegedly committed by the disgraced Hollywood producer. Nicole Blumberg, a prosecutor, stated in a hearing in a New York state criminal court in Manhattan that the new assaults Weinstein is accused of are still within the statute of limitations for criminal charges.
Weinstein, a prominent figure in the #MeToo movement, was previously found guilty of rape and sexual assault in 2020. More than 80 women had accused him of sexual misconduct. Despite being sentenced to 23 years in prison, a court later overturned his conviction, citing procedural errors in the trial.
During the recent court hearing, Weinstein's lawyer raised concerns about prosecutors adding new victims to the case post-conviction overturn and implied that the investigation was a delay tactic. Blumberg clarified that the office is actively pursuing rape allegations within the statute of limitations and some potential survivors might testify during the new trial.
The prosecution aims to move forward with the trial in the fall, indicating November as a realistic timeframe. The next pre-trial hearing is scheduled for July 19.
