French President Macron criticizes comments made by Israeli minister endorsing far-right candidate Marine Le Pen.
French President Emmanuel Macron has criticized the "unacceptable" statements made by an Israeli minister who openly endorsed far-right candidate Marine Le Pen ahead of the French parliamentary elections.
Reports from Israeli news sources revealed that Amichai Chikli, the Diaspora Affairs Minister, praised the National Rally party leader, stating that she would be beneficial for Israel.
Macron, in response, expressed his discontent by contacting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to address the issue. Chikli defended his support for Le Pen based on her views regarding Hamas, the International Criminal Court, and the Jewish community's battle against anti-Semitism.
The French president conveyed to Netanyahu that Chikli's remarks were considered interference and deemed them unacceptable. Netanyahu assured Macron that measures would be taken to prevent further comments from Israeli ministers on France's internal affairs.
A senior Israeli official described Chikli's actions as a "diplomatic bomb," emphasizing the sensitivity of the situation. Le Pen and the National Rally have adjusted their foreign policy approach in recent years to distance themselves from allegations of anti-Semitism.
Foreign Minister Israel Katz reiterated Israel's neutrality in the French elections, emphasizing respect for French democracy amidst the unfolding controversy.
