Serbian police investigate potential ties to foreign terrorist groups after a crossbow attack on an Israeli embassy guard.
An individual who attacked an Israeli embassy guard in Belgrade with a crossbow was shot and killed in what authorities are calling a "terrorist attack against Serbia."
The assailant repeatedly approached the officer in a guardhouse, inquiring about a museum's whereabouts before pulling out the crossbow and shooting the guard. The officer retaliated, hitting the assailant with an arrow. The attacker succumbed to his injuries later.
Interior Minister Ivica Dacic labeled the incident a terrorist attack and emphasized ongoing investigations into possible motives. One individual was detained near the crime scene, with authorities probing potential links to foreign terrorist groups.
The wounded police officer, struck in the neck, underwent surgery to remove the arrow and is currently in stable condition. Serbia is in a heightened state of alert, with law enforcement detaining several individuals associated with the attack.
Serbia's President, Aleksandar Vucic, condemned the attack as an "act of insanity," promising a severe crackdown on terrorism within the country. Prime Minister Milos Vucevic echoed this sentiment, condemning the incident as heinous and assuring Serbian citizens of their safety.
The Israeli embassy in Belgrade, located near the US embassy, remains closed, with no staff members harmed. Meanwhile, Israel-linked entities worldwide remain on high alert following Israel's conflict with Gaza.
Investigative authorities and forensic teams are actively working on the case, with multiple arrests made in connection to the incident.
