Their travels were marked by adversities such as being robbed at gunpoint in Colombia, navigating treacherous terrains in Panama, and embarking on a dangerous 12-hour sea voyage in Mexico. Li communicated with his family during the Chinese New Year, prompting an emotional moment with his son who came to understand the value of freedom. Their story is not unique, as over 37,000 Chinese nationals were apprehended in 2023 for illegal border crossings into the US, making them a prominent demographic group attempting this hazardous expedition, particularly individuals from the middle class. Amidst a political and economic environment in China characterized by darkness, Li expressed his disillusionment. Having once lived the 'Chinese dream,' with a successful business and a comfortable lifestyle, the upheaval caused by the COVID-19 pandemic shattered his livelihood, compelling him to seek a new beginning. Li's discontent with the oppressive regime in China, coupled with his desire for freedom of speech, motivated his decision to migrate to the United States. Despite facing detainment upon arrival in Texas, he eventually settled in New York alongside his son, embracing the pursuit of autonomy. Many middle-class Chinese like Li exhibit a phenomenon referred to as 'voting with feet,' where individuals seek refuge in the US due to economic prosperity and political liberty. The escalating restrictions and economic downturn in China have fueled aspirations for a better future among this demographic, leading to a surge in migration through unconventional routes. The challenges faced by individuals like Vincent Wang, once a thriving guesthouse proprietor in China, reflect a broader narrative of economic decline and stifling political constraints prompting them to seek opportunities elsewhere.
