Centrist Masoud Pezeshkian to Lead as Iran’s President

Masoud Pezeshkian emerged victorious in the run-off election with 53.7 percent of the votes, expressing awareness of the challenges ahead.

Iran’s president-elect Masoud Pezeshkian has pledged inclusivity and unity as he begins his presidency after winning the run-off election against hardline opponent Saeed Jalili.

Emphasizing the challenges that lie ahead, Pezeshkian urged for the support and trust of the Iranian people in navigating the future together.

“I extend my hand towards you and swear on my honour that I will not leave you alone on this path. Don’t leave me alone,” he affirmed.

The Ministry of Interior officially confirmed Pezeshkian's victory, securing 53.7 percent of the votes, while Jalili garnered 44.3 percent.

Following the announcement, Jalili graciously accepted defeat, emphasizing the importance of respecting the will of the people and supporting the elected leader.

Celebrations erupted among Pezeshkian supporters following the declaration of results, with expressions of congratulations pouring in from global leaders.

Low turnout

The election witnessed a 49.8 percent turnout, marking a closely contested race between Pezeshkian and Jalili.

Previously, the election held on June 28 recorded a historically low participation rate, reflecting widespread disengagement as over 60 percent of voters abstained from casting their ballots.

Following this round, Pezeshkian emerged with 42.5 percent of the vote, compared to Jalili's 38.7 percent.

With only 40 percent of eligible voters partaking in the June election, the lowest turnout since the 1979 Islamic Revolution was observed.

Reportedly, around 50 percent of Iranians abstained from the recent election, signaling disillusionment with the political process and a silent form of protest.

The newly elected president will undergo official endorsement and swearing-in ceremonies before assuming office.

Challenges ahead

Analysts anticipate Pezeshkian’s presidency to potentially steer Iran towards a pragmatic foreign policy stance, with prospects for easing global tensions and advancing social reforms.

Both candidates had outlined economic revival agendas to address the country's challenges exacerbated by sanctions and economic mismanagement.

Internally, Pezeshkian may encounter resistance from powerful unelected bodies within Iran, complicating policy implementation.

External factors, including the outcome of the U.S. presidential election, are expected to influence Iran’s foreign policy trajectory.

Ultimately, Pezeshkian will operate within the framework of state policies dictated by the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
