Actor George Clooney and Democratic Senator Peter Welch urge President Biden to step aside citing concerns over his age and fitness.
United States President Joe Biden’s shaky re-election bid has further deteriorated with mounting pressure from allies questioning his age and capability. Actor George Clooney, in an essay published in The New York Times, expressed concerns about Biden's decline, stating he observed a significant change from the previous campaign. Clooney emphasized that Biden's current state is not reassuring compared to his past self.
Clooney asserted that if Biden continues as the Democratic nominee, he would not stand a chance against Republican contender Donald Trump. Additionally, Clooney claimed that Democrats could lose control of the House of Representatives and the Senate if Biden remains on the ticket.
Democratic Senator Peter Welch echoed these sentiments in an opinion piece published in The Washington Post, becoming the first Senate member to advocate for Biden's withdrawal from the race. Welch highlighted the need for Biden to reassess his candidacy and questioned whether he is the most suitable candidate to challenge Trump.
Concurrently, House Democrats Earl Blumenauer and Pat Ryan, along with New York Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado, have also called for Biden to step down. Notably, ten Democratic lawmakers have publicly urged Biden to exit the race, citing concerns over his ability to defeat Trump.
Despite mounting calls for him to reconsider his candidacy, Biden has repeatedly dismissed the notion of stepping aside. He remains resolute in his belief that he is the strongest contender to defeat Trump, attributing criticisms to media sensationalism and elitist influences within the Democratic Party.
In an effort to shore up support within his party and dispel doubts about his fitness for office, Biden is schedule to hold a rare news conference on Thursday. This move comes amidst dwindling re-election prospects, with polls suggesting Trump leading in national surveys and key battleground states.
The escalating uncertainty surrounding Biden's candidacy has prompted speculation about potential replacements, with Vice President Kamala Harris being touted as a probable successor if Biden were to withdraw.
Should Biden opt to bow out, it would introduce unprecedented uncertainty into the electoral race, given that the primary season has concluded, and the party's candidate will not be formally decided until the Democratic National Convention next month.
