Amazon is launching a discount section featuring cheap items shipped directly from China, in response to the growth of bargain sites.
Amazon.com is set to introduce a dedicated section on its platform where customers can purchase inexpensive products sourced directly from warehouses in China. The move, revealed by tech news site The Information and based on slides shown to Chinese sellers, signifies Amazon's robust countermeasure to the rising popularity of discount-focused platforms like Temu and Shein.
According to the disclosed information, the new marketplace will specialize in offering unbranded fashion items, home essentials, and daily necessities. Customers can expect their orders to arrive within a timeframe of 9 to 11 days. The announcement underscores Amazon's strategic push to provide diverse product options at competitive prices while ensuring swift delivery.
The e-commerce titan briefed Chinese sellers in a recent private gathering about its plans to onboard merchants during the summer months and commence accepting inventory later in the year. Sellers leveraging this platform will have autonomy over their product assortment and pricing strategies. Moreover, they can conduct small-scale production runs to gauge consumer interest in potential new offerings.
In response to inquiries regarding the report, an Amazon spokesperson informed Reuters news agency that the company continuously seeks innovative collaborations with selling partners to enhance customer satisfaction through expanded product choices, lower costs, and enhanced convenience.
The specifics surrounding the shipping method of these items remain unclear, particularly if they will utilize a US trade provision that exempts individual shipments valued at less than $800 from US customs tariffs. Notably, industry players Shein and Temu rely on an accelerated customs clearance process permitted for direct-to-consumer shipments valued at $800 or less.
It is evident that Amazon's envisioned discount section with direct shipping from China reflects its commitment to staying abreast of evolving consumer preferences and market dynamics, emphasizing accessibility to affordable products without compromising on quality or delivery speed.
