Russia-Ukraine conflict: Key events on day 843

Notable developments as the conflict reaches its 843rd day

Here is the status on Monday, June 17, 2024.

Combat

  • Seven individuals, including two young boys, sustained injuries during a Russian strike on the Nova Poltavka village in the eastern Donetsk region, as reported by the regional prosecutor’s office.

Political and Diplomatic Efforts

  • Numerous nations supported Ukraine's territorial sovereignty within its recognized borders and called for dialogue to reach a lasting peace following a two-day peacebuilding summit in Switzerland. However, Saudi Arabia, India, South Africa, Thailand, Indonesia, Mexico, and the United Arab Emirates did not endorse the statement. Switzerland expressed readiness to host another summit.
  • The concluding communique emphasized the need for a complete prisoner exchange and the return of Ukrainian children deported to Russia. Kyiv claims up to 20,000 children have been taken to Russia or Russian-occupied regions without consent from their families or guardians since Moscow's full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
  • During a press briefing after the summit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged China to directly communicate its peace proposals to Ukraine rather than through media channels. China did not send a delegate to the summit.
  • The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) highlighted in its annual report that efforts to control nuclear arms had faced significant hurdles due to tense international relations stemming from the Ukraine and Gaza conflicts, with Moscow halting its participation in the New START treaty and conducting tactical nuclear drills.
  • Approximately 500 participants gathered in Kyiv under heavy police security for the city’s first Pride march since Russia's large-scale invasion.

Armament

  • Zelenskyy stated that the current volume of Western military support being sent to Ukraine is insufficient to guarantee Kyiv’s triumph over Russian forces.
