Peace Conference Backs Ukraine, Advocates for Dialogue to End Russian Conflict

International leaders demand the release of war prisoners and the repatriation of Ukrainian children abducted by Russia.

Representatives from numerous countries attending the Summit on Peace in Ukraine emphasized the importance of respecting Kyiv’s “territorial integrity” and called for “dialogue between all parties” to resolve the ongoing conflict with Russia.

In the final communique from a significant two-day diplomatic summit held in Switzerland on Sunday, the majority of the participating nations also supported calls for a comprehensive exchange of captured soldiers and the return of deported Ukrainian children.

“We believe that reaching peace requires the involvement of and dialogue between all parties,” the document stated.

In his closing remarks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed hope that “results” would be achieved “as soon as possible.”

“We’ll prove to everyone in the world that the UN Charter can be restored to full effectiveness,” he said.

He added that Russia was not yet agreeing to a just peace, stating, “Russia can start negotiations with us even tomorrow without waiting for anything – if they leave our legal territories.”

However, some countries such as Saudi Arabia, India, South Africa, Thailand, Indonesia, Mexico, and the United Arab Emirates did not endorse the summit’s final document, and Brazil, listed as an “observer,” did not sign.

The closing document reinforced "the principles of sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of all states, including Ukraine, within their internationally recognized borders."

Over 90 countries had gathered in the Swiss resort of Burgenstock to debate Kyiv’s proposed plans to end the conflict.

Moscow was not invited and has condemned the summit as "absurd" and pointless.

Kyiv worked diligently to ensure participation from countries with cordial ties to Russia.

Prisoner exchange, return of Ukrainian children

The final document called for all prisoners of war to be released in a “complete exchange” and for Ukrainian children who were “deported and unlawfully displaced” to be returned to Ukraine.

Kyiv accuses Russia of abducting nearly 20,000 children from areas in the east and south of the country occupied by Russian forces.

Summit working groups also addressed global food security and nuclear safety concerns.

“Food security must not be weaponized,” the declaration stated, emphasizing that access to Black and Azov Sea ports is “critical” for global food supply.

The summit representatives also demanded that Ukraine be given “full sovereign control” over the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Europe’s largest nuclear facility, currently under Russian control.

On Sunday, Russia’s defense ministry announced that its forces had captured another village in the Zaporizhia region, according to the Interfax news agency.
